My Ring Wins Public Choice at the Hawaii Jewelers Association 2012 Design Contest

A little over a year ago, I designed my engagement ring with my favorite jewelry store Mellow Antiques .  I went to Mellow because I was given a 1920′s European cut diamond from Steve’s grandmother and wanted antique jewelers who were experienced in this type of diamond.

Owner Laura Mellow has over 30 years of antique jewelry and design experience and not only did she (with the help of Greta) help me create my dream ring, but also taught me about the diamond and how to best showcase its beauty and protect it.

This year Mellow entered my ring in the 2012 Hawaii Jewelers Association design contest.  My ring won public choice in one of the three categories.  I was so excited to hear about the news and that the general public loves my ring as much as I do! Thank you Mellow Antiques!!

The Charming Wine Town, Pitigliano

Sorano, the town we were staying in, was about 10 minutes away from one of our favorite towns during our trip, the charming wine town of Pitigliano.

Pitigliano is famous for their wine and well known for their Bianco di Pitigliano.  While we were there it happened to be there for the annual “Petilia Festival” that happens every last weekend in August.  During this traditional festival the wine cellars of the historic centre are opened and visitors are offered the opportunity to visit the cellars and try the high quality wines.  Local cuisine is also served and there is live music, entertainment, and dance.

Steve and I went to one night of the festival and were completely blown away by the 1€ glass wine, delicious food, loud entertainment, and no English speaking tourists.  We were out numbered by local Italians, but they made us feel very welcomed by filling our wine glasses to top, offering us food, and allowing an insight into their special celebration.

Here is a video clip of  of our wild night at the Petilia Festival…

Agriturismo Sant’Egle, Sorano

The farm address did not translate well into the gps, and we were led to the middle of no where.  After circling for about 30 minutes, Steve pulled over and asked for directions in downtown Sorano.  He walked into a local bar and Steve said no one spoke a word of English, but one of the men in the bar seemed to know where Sant’Engle was and offered to show us where to go.

We followed his speeding SUV about 3 minutes away and then he pulled off the side of the road and pointed to a sign, our farm stay Agriturismo Sant’Engle!  We graciously thanked him, waved, and then he sped off with his dog.

Sant’ Engle an organic farm and Agritourismo is owned and operated by two Italians Erika and Alessandro.  The original farm structure was built in the sixteen hundreds and has been remodeled to “farm luxury.”  It is located in the province of Grosseto, in Maremma Tuscany, Italy.

The place was rustic, but hotel clean and had modern amenities like remodeled bathroom, wifi, organic breakfast buffet, mini frig, and tea pot.  The surroundings, scenery, and nearby farms were like pictures out of a book.

We ended up really loving our stay at Sant’Engle and stayed there for 5 nights.  We got 9+ hours sleep every night, were tv free, jogged the dirt roads in the morning, explored the nearby hill towns in the daytime, and even found an amazing restaurant about 5 minutes away that made the best pizza we had on our entire trip called  Ristorante Il Talismano.

Sant”Engle also has a restaurant that is open on Fridays and Saturdays.  We got to sample a three course dinner that was made with many of their locally grown items from the farm.

I highly recommend this farm stay to anyone who would like “farm-luxury.”  It is in the middle of no where, so an adventurous nature is highly recommended.

Best Pasta of My Life, Manarola

August 20, 2012, it seems like everyday in Italy I eat the best pasta I ever ate in my whole life. Several days down now and my pasta at Trattoria Dal Billy takes the cake so far.

I had the lasagnette agli scampi made with fresh homemade pasta of course and fresh shrimp scampi with a white wine and tomato sauce. I was melting with happiness and delight…

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm

If you are ever in Maui and have a half day to drive up to Kula, you should try and make the trip up to the Ali’i Kula Lavendar Farm.  This 10 acre estate is breath taking.  The air is cool, fragrant, and time really stands still up here.  There are walking tours of the farm or you can just explore the farm on your own for free.

AKL resides on an elevation of roughly 4000 ft. and is home to approximately 55,000 lavender plants and 45 different varieties of lavender, olive trees, hydrangea and protea.  My first visit was off season for the lavender plants, and we didn’t get to see AKL in all its glory in full bloom, but I still thought the farm was amazing, definitely one of my favorite places to visit.

Eating Our Way Through Taiwan

In September 2010, five friends rented a car and did a round trip journey from Taipei, Taiwan to the southern coast of Kenting on a surfing adventure.  Little did we know that the best part of traveling through Taiwan was eating all the amazing and inexpensive food!!

Beef noodle, dumplings-dumplings-dumplings, garlic toast, street food, oyster omelets, fresh seafood, and HOT POT (just to name a few).  My favorite thing about Taiwan was the FOOD, and we really did eat our way through Taiwan…

My Favorite TrenDiva Earrings

I am so fortunate to have access to an endless supply of trendy, show stopping, stylish jewelry from my bestie Chany Kumalae with TrenDiva.  Now when I go out, it’s really tough to decide what fabulous pieces to wear!

Still, I have managed to decide on a favorite!  These gold and black crystal barrel hoops are called “hip hop chic” and were only $20.  They are super light and comfortable to wear, but still stand out and make a statement.  They match a ton of my outfits and look amazing!

Chany told me that all her “hip hop chic” loops are currently all sold out!! She may get more in, but in the meantime check out a few of these new hoops all available on TrenDiva Collection online

My Favorite Mexican Restaurant, Old Town Mexican Cafe, San Diego, CA

Whenever I am in San Diego, I make sure I take a trip to Old Town where you can find historical sites, shopping, souvenirs, events, and tons of eateries.  Killing some time and playing tourist one day a couple years ago, I discovered an authentic Mexican restaurant that was hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants I’ve ever been to called Old Town Mexican Cafe.

Located in the heart of Old Town on 2489 San Diego Avenue, what caught my attention was the tortilla makers in the window.

The first time I ate there I really can’t remember what I ate because what didn’t I eat? And I had to be rolled out of there after eating about 10 homemade tortillas on top of my regular lunch!

The tortillas here are to die for.  Corn or flour, they are made fresh out front and have the wonderful freshly made chewiness that I love in my tortillas.  Tortillas come upon request with any meal.

So far everything I’ve tasted at Old Town Mexican Cafe is DE-lious!! Crispy tacos, potato taquitos, guacamole sauce, enchiladas with mole sauce, chips and salsa, and don’t even get me started on the TORTILLA SOUP!!

For my readers who have had authentic tortilla soup (not the kind from California Pizza Kitchen), this place makes the real deal! The soup broth is made with crispy bacon, YES BACON, and makes the soup on the smoky side with little bits of crispiness to enjoy through out.  This is probably the best tortilla soup I have ever had anywhere! The broth is savory and almost addictive.  It was also served with avocado, chicken, and crunchy tortilla strips.

If you’re ever in San Diego and want some of the best Mexican food of your life (aside from being in Mexico), you must make a trip to Old Town and hit up Old Town Mexican Cafe.  Bring your appetite and maybe even wear your elastic pants!

Towel Art??!!

Who knew you could make a monkey out of some hand towels? One of the favorite parts of my Christmas cruise on Holland America Line was coming back to my room after dinner to find a new “towel art” animal in our room.  These guys got pretty creative, right?!
