Don’t go to the North Shore of Oahu on the weekends! Okay, you’ve been warned! It use to be bumper to bumper traffic during the Eddie Aikau surf competition or Pipe Master or if the waves were record breaking big in the winter time, but now it’s every weekend!
Flat surf, cloudy days, the middle of summer, you name it – traffic, traffic, traffic! The traffic is particularly bad at the beginning of Haleiwa to Laniakea Beach. My friends said that this last weekend it took them one hour to drive through Haleiwa to Laniakea!
This problem has been slowing creeping up and getting worst over the past couple years. North Shore residents are very concerned and will be holding a “talk story” meeting September 5, 2013 at Sunset Beach Elementary.
As a new resident of the north shore this traffic is a huge concern for me too. An over abundance of weekend tourists is good for the economy, but can make a huge impact on the environment particularly overcrowded beaches that can lead to pollution, litter, and stress on the ecosystem.
North Shore is not Waikiki, and locals like me want to keep it that way! Hopefully, government leaders can stop dragging their feet and come to a traffic solution that we can all agree on and will also “keep the country country!”
