It’s fast approaching about a year since we made the move to Kailua. It was a drastic move coming from a larger home in the country of Kahaluu to a cozy two bedroom condo in busy Kailua Town. I don’t fancy the weekend tourist crowds or the relentless traffic, but I have to admit I am loving the walkability and bike riding to stores, parks, and the beach. I choose my routes wisely and manage to find uncrowded beach times, happy hour specials, and the best deals at Target. Here are a few of my favorite spots in Kailua not in the guidebooks.
We eat here about once a week! It’s an exact copy of Chipotle and can I say, “thank you!” In this quick and affordable take out eatery you can choose from chicken, pork, beef, tofu, and veggie burritos, tacos, and bowls. I love that they use grass fed beef, organic chicken, organic tofu, and tomatoes grown on Hawaii farms. All of their meats, beans, rice, salsa are prepared fresh daily with fresh, local ingredients.
This has been my favorite yoga studio for years. With two locations, one in Aikahi Shopping Center and one off of the Pali Highway there are so many classes daily to choose from at only $10/class. This studio offers many different types and levels of yoga with excellent instructors. I prefer these open air studios located in quiet churches over the air conditioning ones located in strip malls.
The Windward Bar at Whole Foods
My favorite place for drinks and fried gourmet snacks is the Windward Bar at Whole Foods. This loud and usually untidy bar has indoor and outdoor seating area that comes with mediocre service. I can overlook the service because of their large selection of gourmet beer for Steve, cheap wine for me, delicious fried delights, being kid friendly, and even dog friendly in the outside seating area. They have happy hour specials Monday through Friday from 4-6 pm.
I’ve been going to this place for massages for years. For $35 you can get an one hour intern massage in a spa-like setting. Of course this is not a Four Season’s spa experience, but $35 for one hour it’s so worth it! All the interns I’ve ever had have been nothing but professional and friendly. I highly recommend this place to get some relaxation.
Here are a few other favorite runner ups that are also worth checking out:
- Roundtable Pizza
- Kono’s in Kailua
- Kailua Town Farmers Market on Sunday mornings on Kuulei Road
- Lemongrass Kailua
