Most people don’t realize that Tahiti is only a 5 hour plane ride away from Oahu. Hawaiian Airlines now flies once a week directly to Pape’ete, Tahiti, and there is no time zone change. Steve and I decided to take advantage of the convenience of Tahiti and planned a surf trip a few months ago.
Our friend Keoki referred us to his friend who lives on Tahiti who is originally from Maui who has a home in Papara and rents rooms. Steve and I didn’t know what to expect with the rental, but we were pleasantly surprised by the accommodations. The house was a beautiful home right on the water, and we had access to huge bathroom and kitchen to cook our meals. The best part of the stay was meeting Ralph and his family who was more than gracious with hospitality and local knowledge.
Steve and I spend one week exploring Tahiti. Our main goal was to find surf, so we rented a tiny Peugeot that actually fit our two surfboards and drove all over Tahiti and even caught the ferry to Mo’orea looking for surf. Tahiti is just like the Hawaiian islands with an abundance of surf, so we were lucky to be able to surf pretty much everyday.
Tahiti is truly paradise with lush landscape, turquoise water, and some of the most friendly people you will ever meet. One week flew by, and we only got to scratch the surface of Tahiti. We are looking forward to our next trip back to explore other islands and search for more surf breaks. Stay tuned for two more blog posts coming up next on Tahiti’s food and surf!
